Sad news out of Indiana today: An up-and-coming star in the racing world, 13-year-old Peter Lenz of Vancouver, was killed while racing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway when he fell off his motorcycle. Medical workers attended to him immediately, but he was pronounced dead three hours after the incident. Lenz, despite his young age, had participated in racing for six years, and his death is sure to renew debate about the ages appropriate for the sport. The accident occurred prior to the United States Grand Prix Races Union event, which is billed as preparation for young riders aged 12 to 18. Lenz’s family issued a statement, partly reading: “We are deeply saddened by the loss but know that Peter is racing even faster in the sky.”
