At least 15 Indians have gone blind after a doctor at a free eye surgery camp used suspected infected equipment to remove cataracts. The government is investigating the NGO and doctors who performed the operations, mostly on elderly women. It is also trying to find the other 45 patients who were operated on at the camp in northern India. India has one of the lowest rates of public spending on medical care in the world, according to the World Health Organization, and also the largest number of blind people.
