At least nineteen people are dead after a series of shootouts Friday between armed men and police in Mexico’s gang-plagued northwestern state of Sinaloa, according to Mexican authorities. Police killed seventeen gunmen in the fighting and two other men were killed in an earlier related shooting. No police officers were killed but five were injured and are reported to be in stable condition. Mexican authorities attributed the violence to gangs fighting over terrain and the transport of drugs.
