Broadway’s biggest awards revealed their nominees today, and timeless classics were a big hit. Oscar Wilde's comedy of manners The Importance of Being Earnest and Shakespeare's tragicomedy The Merchant of Venice are both in the running for best revivals and best costume design. Their leads each earned best actor nominees, too—Brian Bedford as the formidable Lady Bracknell and Al Pacino as Shylock. The Book of Mormon and The Scottsboro Boys cleaned up with 14 and 12 nominations respectively. Scottsboro made a huge comeback from last year (it was forced to close after only two performances), earning nods for best musical, best actor (Joshua Henry), best featured actor, best direction, best choreography, and best score for John Kander and the late Fred Ebb. Having just come overseas from London, the powerful puppet play War Horse immediately earned critical acclaim and is in the running for best play, best direction, and best scenic design.
