An estimated 26 people were killed Saturday in a car-bomb attack in southern Yemen, as country’s first new president in more than 20 years took the oath of office. The blast struck outside the presidential palace in the city of Mukalla, and elite Republican Guards were among the dead. Nine people were killed in clashes Tuesday during the election of Yemen’s new president, Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi. Saleh will formally hand power over to Hadi on Monday. In a speech broadcast live on television Saturday, Hadi vowed to continued to fight al Qaeda, as Yemen’s chaotic government has left a power vacuum that has allowed many al Qaeda extremists to settle there.
