Japanese air-bag manufacturer Takata doubled the number of U.S. cars that are subject to its recall on Tuesday, with the devices in 33.8 million U.S. vehicles declared defective. the rupture-prone air bags have been linked to at least six deaths and dozens of injuries, and led to a months-long recall push by the National Highway Safety Administration. Takata’s announcement will rank among the largest automotive recalls ever, with repairs taking place in phases. Areas with high humidity have been linked to the most severe air bag issues. The recall is believed to be the largest of any consumer product in U.S. history, surpassing the 31 million bottles of Tylenol recalled in 1982 over posion fears.
