A History of the Double Bun

At the MTV VMAs, a twerkin' Miley Cyrus donned a two-bun hairstyle. From Princess Leia to Scary Spice, a look at the history of the hairdo.

It would be remiss to name the Queen of Twerkin's double-bun-nugget "The Miley," as has been done before. Long before Cyrus stepped writhed onstage in latex at the VMAs with the aforementioned hairstyle, the double bun topped the heads of Princess Leia, Gwen Stefani, and even "Scary Spice" Melanie Brown. More recently, young stars including Kylie Jenner, Rita Ora, and yes, even Miley are reviving the look. See a brief history of the double-bun.

Princess Leia

The "cinnamon-bun" look was truly out of this world when Star Wars was first released in 1977. The film's beloved Princess Leia is the founding mother behind the double-bun trend. In addition to inspiring other daring women in entertainment, we contend her look influenced the makers of the first headphones.

Pop singer Brandy took the double bun to the next level by braiding them for her role as Moesha on the 90s sitcom. Sweet Brandy buns! And no, we're not talking about the pastry.

Scary Spice

Mel B's Scary Spice semblance would have been neither scary nor spicey if it weren't for her horn-like buns.

Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes

TLC's Lisa Lopes wanted less "scrubs" and more bun. The 90s pop star added a third for a true bun trifecta.

Miley was not the first to stun with buns at the VMAS. International music icon Björk showstopped at the VMAs back in '94 with several mini-buns in her hair.

Gwen Stefani

There's No Doubt Gwen Stefani is a trendsetter. When she rocked two buns on her head, we all went b-a-n-a-n-as.

Miley Cyrus

Don't mistake Miley's hair nubbins for devil horns. Her VMA twerkin' spectacle was a shocking debut for both pairs of buns.

Caitlin Moe

DJ Caitlin Moe wanted to show fashion elites at the premiere of Mademoiselle C that she is down with hair trends. She rocked the double-bun look with an added accessory -- Moe loves the bow.
