It's been a tough year for Al Gore. First, he split from wife Tipper, then came the allegations of sexual misconduct from a masseuse, and now, in a strange ironic twist, the Los Angeles-area Carson-Gore Academy of Environmental Sciences, named after Gore and environmentalist Rachel Carson, was built on contaminated land. The soil beneath the $75.5 million school was once covered in contaminated groundwater from industrial storage tanks housed on the site. Workers are now rushing to replace the tainted soil with clean soil before the fall semester begins on September 13. Despite the public outcry, school officials believe all is well. "There's no doubt in my mind that the site is safe, and if there are any changes, our monitoring or our existing processes will detect it and we'll react to that," said L.A. school system safety chief John Sterritt.
