Archaeologists have discovered a city founded by Alexander the Great in Iraq that was lost for more than 2,000 years. A team of Iraqi and British archaeologists affiliated with the British Museum found the city of Qalatga Darband, which is believed to have been founded in 331 BC, with the help of drone photography and recently declassified intelligence images from the 1960s. “It’s early days, but we think it would have been a bustling city on a road from Iraq to Iran,” said team leader John MacGinnis. “You can imagine people supplying wine to soldiers passing through.” Archaeologists have so far found the outlines of buildings, Greek coins, and statues of Greco-Roman deities.
