Art Linkletter, the television star beloved in the '50s and '60s for his hosting of the shows People Are Funny and House Party, died Wednesday at the age of 97. Art Linkletter's House Party was one of the longest-running TV shows of all time, having begun on the radio in 1944 and aired on CBS from 1952 through 1969. That show was famous for its interviews with young kids, and the resulting book, Kids Say the Darndest Things, sold millions of copies. Linkletter wrote about his wholesome family life with his wife of 50 years, Lois, in a book called Links, but in 1969 his daughter, Diane, 20, jumped from her sixth-floor apartment and died. He blamed her death on LSD and became an anti-drug crusader.
