Edith Bunker, ‘All in the Family’

Despite starring in a sitcom, the Bunker family was not immune to society’s problems—and Archie Bunker’s long-suffering wife, Edith, was especially not immune. All in the Family was a groundbreaking sitcom—it dealt head on with many of the most important social issues. In the eighth season, Edith (Jean Stapleton) is nearly raped and she develops phlebitis in the final episode of season nine. But all the viewers were still shocked when Edith’s character was killed off in the first episode of the second season of the All in the Family’s spinoff, Archie Bunker’s Place. The season kicked off with Edith having died in her sleep from a stroke, and Archie delivered a memorable eulogy in her favor—proclaiming, “It wasn't supposed to be like this. I was supposed to be the first one to go. Always used to kid you about you going first. You know I never meant none of that and that morning when yous was laying there. I was shaking you and yelling at you to go down and fix my breakfast. I didn't know. You had no right to leave me that way.”
