Lane Pryce, ‘Mad Men’

In a season filled with death motifs, it was not exactly surprising that someone would die, but did anyone really expect it to be one of the founding partners of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce? In the penultimate episode of season five of Mad Men, Lane’s season-long spiral—starting with a strange incident involving a wallet, followed by a fist fight with Pete Campbell, and then, finally, embezzling company funds—ended when Don Draper told Lane to pack his bags and leave the firm. Lane instead decided to take matters into his own hands and decided to kill himself with a Jaguar—the account he had originally initiated for SCDP—but instead the infamously unreliable car wouldn’t start. Instead, Lane went to the office and hanged himself, only to be discovered by his longtime crush, Joan Harris. In one last effort to give Lane the honor he so desperately craved, the partners cut him down from the back of his office door and found what they presumed to be a suicide note but instead was just a boilerplate resignation letter. In an interview after his character’s death, actor Jared Harris said the whole cast knew that someone would bite the dust—but they didn’t know who until series creator Matthew Weiner sat Harris down with expensive brandy. RIP, Lane. Say hi to Miss Blankenship for us.
