Marissa Cooper, ‘The O.C.’

In the early days of Fox’s teen soap The O.C., Marissa Cooper (Mischa Barton) was the female heroine of the show—grappling with a dysfunctional family and pining for the town’s resident bad boy. But by the show’s sagging third season, the show needed a reboot—and they decided to do it by killing off one of the show’s stars. Fox hyped that one of the characters would die prior to the show’s third season finale, but Barton herself cleared up the rumors just before the broadcast, telling Access Hollywood hours before the show aired that her “character has been through so, so much and there’s really nothing left for her to do.” While most of the episode, called “The Graduates,” focused on the kids going to college, it ended with an old boyfriend of Marissa’s coming after her and chasing her and Ryan off a cliff. While Ryan survived the fatal car crash, Marissa was not so lucky and died in his arms. The show’s writers called her death a “creative decision.”
