Maude Flanders, ‘The Simpsons’

Despite teasing commercials that promised “a beloved character will die” on The Simpsons, the 11th season featured the death of a bit player, Maude Flanders, the wife of Homer’s nemesis-neighbor Ned Flanders. The 14th episode of the season, “Alone Again, Natura-Diddily” was written in response to the departure of Maggie Roswell, who voiced Maude, although executive producer Mike Scully denied this was the only reason. Maude is killed by a barrage of T-shirts shot at her through an air cannon while at a car race—but that’s not it for the episode. The Simpsons and the rest of Springfield attend her funeral, held at the Simpson house, before tackling Ned dating. But were fans really that surprised? Given the notice of the title’s name beforehand, many guessed it would be Maude who bit the dust (“diddily” being a familiar Flanders refrain), with one paper even writing “Maude should watch her back.” While the executive producers said their main motive was to draw in ratings, they conceded in the episode—via Reverend Lovejoy’s eulogy—that Maude “was a supporting player in our lives. She didn’t grab our attention with memorable catchphrases or comical accents.”
