Leave it the writers of Mad Men to somehow make the death of a bad secretary a cultural sensation. In Mad Men’s fourth season, Don Draper (Jon Hamm) got a new secretary, Miss Ida Blankenship (Randee Heller). Rather than Don’s usual roster of receptionists—either beautiful or talented or both—Miss Blankenship was not only elderly, but also terrible at her job, shown carting alcohol bottles, memorizing the bathroom habits of the employees, and, worst of all, forgetting to tell Don when he had visitors in his office. But for all her flaws, no one imagined she would die at her desk, “surrounded by the people she answered phones for. Miss Blankenship provided the show with some much-needed comedy in its fourth season, becoming loved by viewers.” Of all the attention, Heller said she never expected in her “wildest dreams” the popularity.
