Omar Little, ‘The Wire’

By The Wire’s fifth season, the show was no stranger to violence and death. But the death of “stickup man” Omar Little (Michael K. Williams) was one of the most shocking for viewers—and even for the actor who played the part. “I was rooting for him like anybody else,” Williams said after the character was killed off. One of the most beloved characters on television—even by President Obama who called Omar fascinating in 2008—Omar was a gay drug dealer who turned into a government witness after the murder of his boyfriend. His days on the street afterward were numbered, especially when he returned to Baltimore. But even Omar couldn’t foresee his end: he was shot by a minor player in the drug gang Omar was battling, a boy no older than 12. Despite that Omar nearly made it to the end of the series, some fans were outraged by his death—with Anthony Wilson writing on his blog, “I thought Omar was supposed to prosper … doesn’t make sense to me.”
