In The King’s Speech, Colin Firth struggled to form sentences in English. In Love, Actually he took Portuguese lessons, but struggled with the language anyway. But at the 2009 Venice Film Festival, where he won Best Actor for A Single Man, Firth charmed reporters at a press conference by speaking in their native tongue. Why is he so proficient? It probably helps that Firth’s wife of 14 years, Livia, is Italian.
