Ned—‘Our Idiot Brother’

Next Previous

We’re first introduced to Ned (Paul Rudd, a well-meaning, idealistic-to-a-fault organic farmer, when he’s arrested for selling pot to a uniformed police officer. After he’s released from prison, he proceeds to shack up with each of his three sisters—Miranda (Elizabeth Banks), a cutthroat tabloid journalist; Liz (Emily Mortimer), a pushover housewife; and Natalie (Zooey Deschanel), a free-spirited bisexual. Ned’s obliviousness causes problems for each sister, damaging her respective romantic entanglements and careers. With his bushy beard, ubiquitous shades, and devil-may-care attitude, Ned is like a more affable version of Lebowski’s The Dude, and in one of his more absent-minded moments, the naive hippie admits to his parole officer that he smoked weed with his neighbor, landing poor ol’ Ned in some hot water.
