George Clooney isn’t just bringing his The Ides of March to Toronto; he’s also unveiling Alexander Payne’s The Descendants, which stars Clooney as a father trying to connect with his two estranged daughters after his wife falls into a coma. The adaptation of Kaui Hart Hemming's novel of the same name is full of Payne’s (Sideways) dark humor and tragic approach to comedy. The Hollywood Reporter calls it Payne’s best film yet; Variety called it “one of those satisfying, emotionally rich films that works on multiple levels;” and A.O. Scott of The New York Times expects The Descendants will “make a good run at the Oscars.”
The Descendants premieres on Saturday, Sept. 10 at the Visa Screening Room at 6:00 p.m.
