Athlete: Derrick Thomas
Team: Kansas City Chiefs
Derrick Thomas emerged in the early 1990s as the defensive heir apparent to Lawrence Taylor, who terrorized opposing offenses in the 1980s. Thomas finished 1990 with 20 sacks, nearly half of which came in one game against the Seattle Seahawks. Despite Thomas’s herculean individual effort, the Chiefs still managed to lose the game when Thomas couldn’t corral his eighth sack and Seattle quarterback Dave Krieg scrambled free to throw a game-winning touchdown.
