Hollywood’s Junkie Turned Preacher
After I met Sam Childers, a criminal turned savior for kids in Sudan, I had to make a movie. By Marc Forster
Kevin Evans
My long-time friend Robbie Brenner, whom I wanted to work with since I left NYU film school, called me up one day and told me that I needed to hear this “one of a kind fascinating” pitch by a writer called Jason Keller.
I met the two of them the next day and Jason pitched me the story of Sam Childers, a preacher who rescues orphaned Sudanese children from a life of warfare and despair. My first reaction was, is this really true, or is this a fictitious character? I decided that before I could get more involved, it was essential for me to meet Sam.
