It may be hard to believe now, but back when Marlboro was introduced in 1924, it was strictly a women’s cigarette—using the slogan “Mild as May”—because it was filtered. Then in the 1950s, with concerns that the product caused lung cancer, the Leo Burnett advertising agency repositioned Marlboro as a manly cigarette (because men were concerned about smoking something perceived as feminine) with the iconic figure of the Marlboro Man. Within a year of the rugged cowboy’s debut, Marlboro’s market share rose from 1 percent to 25 percent, and today it is the best-selling cigarette brand in the world.
