Men controlled more than 80 percent of the beer market when the Miller Brewing Company introduced its diet version in the 1970s. Calling the new brew Miller Lite, the commercials featured famous macho football players—including Dick Butkus and Bubba Smith—who debated whether the beer “tastes great” or is “less filling.” In the end, the real winner was Miller Lite, which became the official beer of the NFL.
