When he was growing up in segregated Atlanta, Cain’s mother was a maid and his father worked three jobs to support his family. In his book They Think You’re Stupid: Why Democrats Lost Your Vote and What Republicans Must Do to Keep It, he recalls helping his dad out with his Friday-night shift as a janitor when he was 13.
