Russell Simmons & Kanye West

Next Previous

Hip-hop star Kanye West and Def Jam cofounder Russell Simmons walked among the masses last Monday in Manhattan’s Zuccotti Park, the headquarters of the Occupy Wall Street movement. Though West remained oddly silent throughout the visit, Simmons spoke for him, telling interviewers that the rapper “has been a big supporter spiritually” of the Occupy protests and that he “didn’t want to do any media.” Simmons also asserted that West “understands this idea of getting the money out of the government and letting the people govern. He wants to give power back to the people.” Not everyone agreed with the picture Simmons painted of an altruistic Kanye, however. One protester shouted, “There are no celebrities, just people!” and another wrote of West on Occupy Wall Street’s Tumblr page, “Didn’t Kanye just release an album bragging about being in the 1 percent?”
