PRETTY WOMAN (1990)
Written by J. F. Lawton and directed by Garry Marshall, the 1990 romantic comedy Pretty Woman transformed Julia Roberts into an A-lister. Roberts stars as a hooker with a heart of gold who encounters a dashing businessman, played by Richard Gere, who sweeps her off her feet. In one of the film’s most memorable scenes, Gere’s character buys Roberts’s prostitute a diamond necklace. When he opens the case and she reaches for it, Gere snaps the case down on her fingers, eliciting Roberts’s great laugh. Gere improvised the scene. and Roberts’s laughter was completely natural. The filmmakers enjoyed it so much that they left it in, and it’s since been parodied in numerous films and TV shows.
