“You know how I know you’re gay?”

THE 40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN (2005)

Judd Apatow’s film oeuvre is notorious for its hilarious improvisation. The entire “Eric Bana in Munich” back-and-forth in Knocked Up is one example. Much of the dialogue in Apatow’s directorial debut, 2005’s The 40-Year-Old Virgin, also was improvised, including the hilarious “You know how I know you’re gay?” scene between David, played by Paul Rudd, and his co-worker Cal, played by a then-unknown Seth Rogen. The two fellas are sitting around playing videogames when Cal starts digging into David for being gay (he’s apparently not gay, he’s “just celibate”). But it’s David who gets the best shot in when he says, “You know how I know you’re gay … You like Coldplay.” Sorry, Chris Martin.
