Buffy the Vampire Slayer: ‘Fear, Itself’

Next Previous

The second of three Halloween-themed Buffy episodes, 1999’s “Fear, Itself” sees Buffy, Xander, Willow, and Oz head to the fictional Alpha-Delta Halloween party dressed as Little Red Riding Hood, James Bond, Joan of Arc, and God, respectively. When werewolf Oz cuts his hand installing sound equipment for the soiree in Season 4, his spilled blood turns all the artificial Halloween decorations into real ones—rubber bats become breathing animals that swoop down from the ceiling, synthetic eyeballs become actual body parts, and a knife-wielding skeleton comes after them. All the quartet’s worst nightmares come true, and they have no choice but to face their fears, since all the windows and doors have disappeared. But, as Oz says while watching Fantasia in the episode, “Maybe it's 'cause of all the horrific things we've seen, but hippos wearing tutus just don't unnerve me the way they used to.”
