Freaks and Geeks: ‘Tricks and Treats’

Next Previous

The high-schoolers of Freaks and Geeks, the single-season series that gave James Franco, Seth Rogen, and Jason Segel their on-screen starts, had a lot of growing up to do in the 1999 Halloween episode “Tricks and Treats.” Sam Weir and his friends Neal and Bill are freshmen worried about being socially acceptable trick-or-treaters, even though they’re excited about Halloween. Sam’s older sister, Lindsay, typically stays home with her mom to pass out candy on the holiday, but ditches her to hang out with her new quasi-delinquent friends (Franco, Segel, and Busy Phillips’s character, Kim). When Lindsay gets into the mischievous spirit, she winds up unknowingly egging her little brother, who tells her, “Nobody thinks you're cool, you know." Though it’s one of Freaks and Geeks’ sadder episodes, there is comic relief in Bill’s decision to dress up as the Bionic Woman and do some role-playing in his mother’s mirror, saying his boobs are “not bionic … These are all me.”
