My So-Called Life: ‘Halloween’

Next Previous

It may have lasted only a season, but My So-Called Life left an incredible impact on early Generation Y-ers, and its 1994 Halloween episode was no different. It’s Oct. 31 at Angela Chase’s Liberty High School, and everyone is dressed up except her. Angela’s vampire-clad friend Rayanne has brought in some old clothes (and cat-eye frames) for her to put on in the always gossip-heavy girls’ bathroom. The two talk about Nicky Driscoll, a boy who died on Halloween night 1963, when, as legend has it, he was hanging a banner for a girl he loved and fell. Dressed as a '60s version of herself, Angela reaches into her sweater pocket and finds a ticket stub from the Liberty High Halloween Hop, dated the night Nicky died. She looks him up in old yearbooks, and soon enough Angela starts seeing visions of Nicky—who happens to be the doppelganger of her current high-school crush, Jordan Catalano—in the hallways. Eventually, Rayanne suggests a Nicky Driscoll séance, and she, Angela, and Brian break into the school, where Angela suddenly finds herself at the ill-fated sock hop three decades earlier.
