Modern Family: ‘Halloween’

Next Previous

Claire Dunphy loves Halloween, and in this 2010 episode from Modern Family’s second season, she decides to turn her family’s home into a haunted house for trick-or-treaters. But her brother-in-law Cam is struggling with an unspoken Halloween-related childhood trauma, her brother Mitchell finds himself the only one dressed up for work (as Spider-Man), and her mother-in-law, Gloria, is feeling hurt after her husband and son mock her Colombian accent when she can’t say “gargoyle.” No one is really in the spooky spirit. Plus, Claire’s daughter, Haley, can’t seem to find a nonslutty costume—she even sexifies Mother Teresa. Claire is upset that all her work on the house is for naught since no one is playing the parts she’s assigned, and she storms out. “Halloween” won an Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series, and Sofia Vergara’s attempt to sound more “American” is absolutely hilarious.
