London lit up with pageantry and pomp today, as the British Royal family did what they do best, creating a stunning display of majestic aesthetics as they travelled in horse-drawn carriages through London to Buckingham palace.

After a riverboat pageant that frankly left many ordinary British people underwhelmed, the Diamond Jubilee truly burst into life today when the Royals travelled via open-topped coach from the palace of Westminster through flag-bedecked, crowd-lined streets.

Prince Philip, still severely unwell after contracting a bladder infection following a four hour boat ride in freezing rain on Sunday, is in hospital and is missing the day's events. The Queen rode next to Camilla instead.

A balcony appearance and RAF flypast is scheduled for 3:30pm.

Barack Obama delivered a video tribute to the Queen from the White House.

"We send you the heartfelt congratulations of the American people. In war and peace, hardship and plenty the United States and United Kingdom have shared a special relationship."

He called Her Majesty a "living witness to our alliance and the chief source of its resilience" and said "you are an example of resolve that will be long celebrated and it is gratifying to know that the bonds between our nations remain indespensible to our two countries and to the world".

"May the light of Your Majesty's crown continue to reign supreme for many years to come," he said.
