Prince William - in character as Flight Lieutenant Wales - flew his Sea King helicopter in freezing conditions to the rescue of two walkers who had got lost in dangerous weather on a moutain Snowdonia, North Wales on Tuesday.

The couple were forced to spend much of the night on the mountainside after venturing onto the Glyder range and not being able to get back off.

Ten members of Ogwen Valley mountain rescue team eventually found the stranded couple. William - who now pilots a helcipoter - was then called from his base at RAF Valley in Anglesey to rescue them.

"The helicopter came about 1am to search the mountain which was quite difficult with patches of low cloud," Chris Lloyd of Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue, said. "Flying in the mountains at night with banks of low cloud requires great skill."
