In this week’s top music video picks, we take a journey through skateboarding tricks, dog mentality, and Pac-Man animation. From hip-hop to electronic and indie rock, and featuring artists like Mayer Hawthorne and Disclosure, see which music videos are becoming viral.
Duck Sauce: “It’s You”
Who knew the barbershop could be this much fun? Duck Sauce is doing what they do best—releasing head-bopping tracks paired with quirky music videos. In “It’s You,” the DJ duo A-Trak and Armand Van Helden are barbers in an unconventional and semi-possessed shop.
Robyn (featuring Snoop Dogg): “U Should Know Better”
It’s a parallel, gender-bending universe in the Robyn-and-Snoop-Dogg duet for “U Should Know Better.” The video—released three years after the dance track first surfaced—features a mini-version of Robyn as a towheaded boy, and a young woman as Snoop Dogg in braids, who also dons his signature shower-cap look.
Paramore: “Anklebiters”
Paramore delivers an energy-driven video that perfectly complements their pop-punk sensibility of their “Anklebiters” track. Pac-Man-esque spheres chase down their prey while a floating hand seamless warps and jumps around in this color-penciled animated clip.
Mayer Hawthorne: “Her Favorite Song”
“Who let the dogs out? Woof, woof, woof, woof!” Mayer Hawthorne’s got some bite in his latest music video for “Her Favorite Song,” as anthropomorphic canines are band members playing instruments and are seduced by some beautiful groupies.
Disclosure: “F For You”
The buzz for garage-house duo Disclosure has been growing since their recent release of debut album, “Settle.” In the video for “F For You,” the young brothers perform as if they were in concert. Although this one doesn’t have as much energy as the video for “When a Fire Starts to Burn,” it’s still captivating with the laser light show taking place behind them.
Clean Bandit: “Dust Clears”
Clean Bandit premiered a beautiful music video for their addictive, indie-pop dance track, “Dust Clears,” showing some inventive uses of a frozen lake. There are some breathtaking shots of a welder wearing historical garb ice-skating (see 1:28) and a group skateboarding (see 4:20) over the icy lake. The British quartet knows how to do it right.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs: “Despair”
Only the star power of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs could get away with something like this! The rock outfit garnered the title of being the first band to shoot a music video on top of New York’s Empire State Building. "There's been a lot of career highs and lows over the years of being in a band, but in the end, how many can say they shot a video on the top of the Empire State Building?" front woman Karen O said in a statement. “We win.”
