Can it really have been three years?

Yes, indeed it has, for Prince William and his wife Kate will today celebrate their third wedding anniversary.

The family will spend the day “privately,” according to officials—and no doubt half-asleep—as they are still recovering from their three-week tour of Australasia.

Neither William or Kate have any official engagements today—in contrast to last year, when pregnant Kate spent the day on a visit to a children’s hospice in Hampshire and William was in Wales on duty as an RAF search-and-rescue pilot.

William gave Kate a stunning, £4,000 Cartier watch just days before they left on their three-week tour of Australia and New Zealand, which, according to a report in the Daily Mail, was an early anniversary present.

Watches—for the benefit of our younger readers, watches were mechanical objects used to tell time before the advent of mobile phones—are popular third anniversary gifts, as it is the “leather” anniversary and watch straps are often made of leather, although Kate’s watch strap is made of stainless steel.
