SNL popped up with another timely bit this week, responding to the release of HBO’s diabolically creepy account of Scientology, Going Clear, with a parody of one of its seminally creepy moments.
The documentary, based on a book of the same name, features footage from a Scientology music video where a number of Church aficionados dressed in garish 90’s garb sing about how great Scientology is.
The filmmakers added annotations highlighting the members who had since left the church, many of whom contributed their horror stories for Going Clear. SNL mimics these brilliantly, along with the general absurdity of a group of otherwise normal people extolling the virtues of Xenu and atom bombs in volcanoes with unhinged exuberance.
