During a live broadcast, South Carolina Pastor Wayne Reeves waded directly into floodwaters to retrieve two caskets unearthed from a nearby graveyard, devastated by Hurricane Joaquin.
Others watched as Reeves plowed through waist-high water despite the police’s warning that it was too dangerous. On Saturday, government officials cautioned residents to beware of alligators and snakes that may have been “displaced by the floodwaters.”
When asked why he ignored the warning, Reeves responded, “This is respect, we got to respect the dead.” He said he did not know the deceased or their family, later telling reporters, “If that was my mama or my dad, I'd walk through hell and high water, and today it happened to be high water.”
