WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange could face arrest in Britain for violating his bail terms, Scotland Yard said Wednesday, one day after Assange sought asylum at the Ecuadorian embassy in London. His bail conditions do not allow him to leave his house between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m., which he violated by spending the night at the embassy, but he now remains out of reach from British law enforcement while at the embassy. Ecuador’s foreign minister, Ricardo Patino, posted a message on Twitter on Tuesday that the free-speech advocate had written to the country’s president, saying he was being persecuted for “publishing truths that compromise the powerful.” Although Ecuador has one of the world’s worst track records for free speech, Patino signaled that his country is “ready to defend principals, not narrow interests.”
