An attack near a U.S. consulate in Afghanistan killed seven people, including two security guards, and wounded 20 on Friday morning. The attack, in the western city of Herat, began when a group of five suicide bombers detonated a van near one of the consulate's auxiliary gates around 5:30 a.m. Fighters then attacked the consulate itself, resulting in an hourlong firefight that killed several attackers. Although the glass of the consulate and several surrounding buildings was shattered, the main gates were not breached.
