Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy party was all but set to claim victory Monday in Myanmar’s first free election in 25 years after the acting chairman of the country’s ruling party conceded defeat. “We lost,” Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) leader Htay Oo told Reuters. Votes were still being counted and no results have been officially announced, but preliminary reports signaled the NLD was ahead by a wide margin. Early Monday, NLD spokesman Win Htein told the AP the party had won between 50 and 80 percent votes in Myanmar’s 14 states. “All of these have to be confirmed by the Union Election Commission. But we are sure about those numbers,” he said.
