Lawyers for James Holmes, the man accused of killing 12 moviegoers in Aurora, Colorado, are offering a guilty plea in a bid to avoid the death penalty. If prosecutors accept the offer, Holmes would spend the rest of his life in prison. When the case began, the judge entered a not-guilty plea for Holmes but said he still has the option of changing that to not guilty by reason of insanity. Prosecutors are scheduled to announce Monday whether they’ll seek capital punishment or accept the defense’s offer.
