The body count in Australia, now at 173, is rising—and the prime minister is calling the country’s raging bushfires “mass murder.” More than a dozen fires are still burning as a 100-person police team hunts for the arsonists behind some of the blazes in Victoria state. A number of sites, including the devastated small town of Maryville, are being treated as possible crime scenes. The fires, which are being described as the largest in Australian history, have destroyed more than 750 homes, left 5,000 people homeless, and burned 850 square miles of land.
