The Wonk Room has obtained an email from Kris Kobach, a lawyer at the Immigration Reform Law Institute that helped to write Arizona’s draconian new immigration law. In the email, Kobach recommends to an Arizona state senator that he add language to the bill allowing law enforcement officers to check the immigration status of people who violate “any county or municipal ordinance,” so that they can deport people with “cars on blocks in the yard.” Wonk Room says the email shows two important things: 1) “The shots are being called by a small group of lawyers whose office is based in Washington, D.C.”: and 2) Lawyers who support the bill are trying their hardest to preserve the intent of eliminated language that would have allowed police to check the immigration status of pretty much anyone they come across.
