The niche art subculture of using cars as one’s canvas has sped under the radar for the past three decades, but car artist Harrod Blank has made it his personal mission to bring the movement to the mainstream. Blank, along with his famous Camera Van, which is covered in 2,700 cameras, is going on a national tour to promote his documentary Automorphosis. The Arizona native’s film was screened as part of the Royal Flush Festival Sunday at the Anthology Film Archives in New York. Though Blank says pockets of car artists exist national, most don’t realize its wide-reaching status—estimating there are 900 art cars in the country. “To me it’s a way of putting my art on the car and bringing my art out onto the street,” explains car artist and photographer Tim McNally, famous for his “Plaid Car,” which is now (after many years of difficult) suggested registered rightfully as said color.
