Just one day before condemned prisoner Andrew Chan was executed by an Indonesian firing squad, he married his fiancée, Fenyanti Herewila, in a private ceremony at an island prison, according to Chan’s brother. The newlyweds celebrated in Besi prison with family and friends. Chan met Herewila in Bali’s Kerobokan prison, where she regularly visited for outreach work as an Indonesian pastor. The Indonesian government executed Chan along with seven other drug convicts in the early hours of Tuesday. Australia pleaded with Indonesia for clemency up until the 11th hour for Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, who spent more than a decade in prison on drug-smuggling charges, but were denied. Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced Wednesday that Australia will withdraw its ambassador from Indonesia to protest the executions.
