According to a senior minister with knowledge of the situation, the jihadists who killed 20 people in a restaurant in Bangladesh are not followers of ISIS but rather a homegrown Bangladeshi group. “They are members of the Jamaeytul Mujahdeen Bangladesh,” Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said, adding that they have no connections with ISIS. The group has been banned in the country for years. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack but the government denies that they have affiliation. Khan said of the attackers: “They are all highly educated young men and went to university. No one is from a madrassa.”
