Susan Cheever

Susan Cheever is the author of numerous works of fiction and nonfiction including American Bloomsbury, My Name is Bill, Note Found in a Bottle, As Good as I Could Be, Home Before Dark, and Treetops. She is a Guggenheim Fellow, a director of the Corporation of Yaddo, and a member of the Author’s Guild. Cheever teaches at the Bennington Writing Seminars and at the New School.

America Anonymous: Eight Addicts in Search of a Life by Benoit Denizet-Lewis caught my eye because I am always looking for books that explain addiction. This dazzling portrait of eight addicts and their intimate, sometimes heartbreaking struggle with substances: food, drugs, alcohol, sex, gambling, is a portrait of our greatest public health crisis. Lewis, whose extraordinary research on addiction punctuates the book, is himself an addict and that infuses these stories with an amazing understanding. Addicts will read this book; those who want to understand addiction should read it!
