Mass Observation: Obama Presidential Inaugural. John Donne once observed that “no man is an island.” Well, come tomorrow, everyone in Washington is going to be lost in a sea of humanity. With more than 3,000,000 people hitting town to observe Barack Obama’s inauguration – and with the bars open all night – websites including this one want people to text and tweet what they see. It’s a neat idea, embracing technology to give live, on the spot attention to matters great and mundane. But better, or more fun anyone, is relating the gossip of the day: who showed up, who broke up and who—well—made the day memorable. Because if we are becoming a nation of voyeurs, we ought to at least have interesting things to watch. |
