Louis C.K. is one of the all-time great comedians. His act is smart, insightful, and more hilarious than you could ever imagine. We all did stand-up to prepare for Funny People, and Louis saw Jonah [Hill] perform and gave him some sound advice. During the show, we were all watching his material thinking, “Holy shit, he’s just a thousand times better than all of us.” |

Mr. Apatow: agreed. Every stand-up has to succeed as both a writer and as a performer, and Louis C.K. is off the charts on both counts. I group him with Chris Rock as one of those comedians whose onstage intensity and mastery is honestly thrilling to watch. If you see one of his shows, you may come away feeling like he was too blue or took things too far, but you have to admit he has absolute control over the room from the second he picks up the mic.
If you wanted someone to teach a master class in stand-up, he would be the one.

I love Louis C.K, but man that show Lucky Louie was awful.
Louis CK is EASILY my favorite contemporary American comedian. And, as BigSwami already pointed out, he excels is nearly every area of comedy: he can write, he can perform, he is whip-smart and can improvise (check out his Opie & Anthony radio talk show appearances)... even watching him onstage breaking in new material is inspiring. In fact, that may be my favorite aspect of his performance catalog. It may get blue, and people may get offended... but I would much rather watch Louis CK onstage, flailing, trying to bottle a punch-line than have to sit through even the most polished material of 90% of the rest of comedians working today.
