![]() Despite evidence that there’s good road food, in my experience it’s hard to find. A 2,000-mile drive last week over the edges of the Great Plains yielded nothing to eat—that is until we got to South Dakota and fell into MJ Adam’s little bistro, The Corn Exchange. Here was comfort and care, well-cooked food, a fine wine list, and a warm and gracious host in MJ herself. We ate well, sampling local grass-fed beef and lamb, silky smoked trout, lusty salads, bison dishes, and a vegetarian entrée, then ended with desserts both refined and rustic, most notably a brown sugar cake with rhubarb bought that morning from the farmer's market. MJ works hard to find what’s raised near her and supplements, with the help of FedEx, those things she can’t find, like good cheeses, olives, olive oils, and organic dairy products. Plan on a reservation at this Rapid City restaurant—the locals appreciate this one-woman effort to create a place-based eatery in a part of the country not necessarily known for its food. |
